HOW IT WORKS

The BC Pet Registry is a program of the BC SPCA.
It started in 2015 with the sole goal of reuniting more lost pets with their owners.

By having more pets’ microchips, tattoos, and licenses registered with our provincial pet ID database, we hope to decrease the length of stay for missing pets in shelters and increase the number of lost pets that are reunited with their families.

1. PET REGISTERED
Microchip, tattoo or licence is registered with the BC Pet Registry. Your contact details are added to your account.
2. PET LOST
Hopefully this never happens, but in the case your pet does go missing, a registered pet will be protected by the BC Pet Registry.
3. PET IDENTIFIED
Your pet is brought in to a veterinary or shelter where their microchip is scanned or tattoo code is read. Your pet’s ID is searched on bcpetregistry.ca.
4. FAMILY ALERTED
You are contacted using the phone number or email on your pet’s profile. If you cannot be reached, the co-owner or emergency contact will be contacted.
5. REUNITE WITH YOUR LOST PET
Thanks to registered permanent ID, your pet is on their way back home!

How much does it cost?

Annual Registration
$12/yr per pet

Lifetime Registration
$45 per pet

Benefits

1. Microchips are the most reliable form of permanent ID.

Microchips are the most reliable form of permanent ID for pets, when implanted properly and registered. Animals with permanent identification are reunited with their guardians in far greater numbers than animals with no identification.

2. Easy and quick procedure.

Microchip implantation is comparable to a routine vaccination. There is no need for anaesthetic when implanting a microchip and the procedure is over in minutes! Are you interested in getting a microchip for your pet? Make an appointment with one of our BC SPCA hospitals or ask your local vet about BC Pet Registry!

3. Microchips last the lifetime of your pet

A microchip is not a GPS or tracking device. Microchips use Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology which is only activated with the use of a microchip scanner. They do not require batteries like a GPS and last the lifetime of the animal.

4. Internationally traceable.

All microchips registered with the BC Pet Registry are traceable internationally via the American Animal Hospital Association’s (AAHA) universal pet microchip lookup, petmicrochiplookup.org. This partnership means that you can travel with your pet with confidence that you’re protected!

5. BC Pet Registry microchips are tested and safe.

The BC Pet Registry uses International Standards Organization (ISO) microchip technology, which is recommended by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA).
