BC Pet Registry donates microchips to Helping Paws in Nanaimo

In 2015, the BC SPCA created the BC Pet Registry, Canada’s first centralized database to help reunite lost pets with the anxious guardians. Since then, more than 150,000 animals have been registered in the system.

The Pet Registry is now helping low-income pet guardians in Nanaimo ensure their animals have proper pet identification. The Pet Registry has donated microchips to Helping Paws, a non-profit organization which is celebrating its third anniversary on May 19.

Helping Paws provides pet guardians who need a little extra support in caring for their animals with services such as health check-ups and treatment, flea prevention and nail trimming,  The Nanaimo BC SPCA takes part in the monthly outreach veterinary clinics, hosted at St. Peters Roman Catholic Church, by supplying clients with pet necessities such as crates, bowls, leashes, harnesses and other items. The clinics are staffed by veterinarians, vet techs, hospital staff and volunteers from clinics across Nanaimo.

“People love their pets and want to provide the best care possible for them,” says BC SPCA senior manager Leon Davis. “Helping lost pets return home safely is very important, so I know that this gift from the BC Pet Registry will really make a difference to Helping Paws and their clients.”
