Delta Community Animal Expo 2025: Microchip Scanning and Community Impact

The 2025 Delta Community Animal Expo at Ladner Memorial Park highlighted the importance of pet microchipping and registration. With 133 pets scanned, the event emphasized that even one unregistered microchip is too many when it comes to protecting pets.

Delta Community Animal Expo 2025: Building Safer Pet Communities

The Delta Community Animal Expo returned to Ladner Memorial Park this summer, once again proving why it is a cornerstone community event. Hosted by the Delta Community Animal Shelter, the expo brought together over 30 booths, including pet adoption agencies, vendors, and activity stations.

For the BC Pet Registry, the highlight was microchip scanning. This year, our volunteers scanned 133 microchipped pets. Of those, 18 were unregistered. While 18 may not seem like a large number, even one unregistered microchip is one too many.

Unregistered Microchips Across Events

In past community events across British Columbia, unregistered rates often reached between 15% and 25%. At PawsFest last month, nearly one in four pets went unprotected.

The chart below shows unregistered microchip rates across several major events in 2024 and 2025. These numbers remind us how important it is to not only microchip pets but also register those chips so they can serve their purpose.

Powered by Volunteers

The Delta Community Animal Expo would not have been possible without our volunteers. We doubled our volunteer team this year, welcoming seven dedicated individuals who brought energy and professionalism to the event. Thanks to their efforts, we scanned more pets than ever before.

Their conversations with pet owners helped spread awareness about the importance of not just microchipping but also registering those microchips. Registration ensures that pets can be reunited with their families quickly and safely.

Why Registration Matters

Stories like this cat reunion in Prince George remind us that a registered microchip is often the key to bringing a pet home. A microchip alone is only the first step. Registration is what links your contact information to that unique number.

Don’t assume your pet’s microchip is automatically registered when visiting the veterinarian. Some clinics use microchips from companies that require pet owners to register the chip themselves — often encouraging them to purchase premium packages or subscriptions.

Looking Ahead

The Delta Community Animal Expo continues to build momentum. Each year, more pets are scanned, more owners are informed, and awareness of registration grows. We look forward to returning next year to continue this important work together.

Don’t forget, check your pet’s microchip status today. A microchip only protects your pet if it’s registered. Don’t wait until it’s too late.
