Engaging the Khatsahlano Community with Lost Pet Prevention Information

On Saturday, July 6th, BC Pet Registry — a program under BC SPCA — participated in a fun-filled day at the Khatsahlano Street Party event. They shared community spirit by interacting with community members and emphasizing the importance of getting visual and permanent identifications (IDs) for their pets.

The day included info-sessions that explained the significance of microchipping and registration, and informed pet guardians of the latest CDC updates on dogs entering the United States. Additionally, the street was filled with music, street performances, and delicious food stalls, making the interaction with our vibrant community even more memorable.

Unity in Action – Big Thanks to our Pawsome Volunteers

Their hard work and enthusiasm made this event possible, and the commitment to our mission in animal welfare is truly inspiring. Additionally, we thank all the pet owners who visited our booth and took the crucial step of microchip scanning to ensure their pet’s registration is up-to-date, which is vital for the pets’ safety and quick reunification if they ever go missing.

Microchipped your Pet? Don’t Forget to Register It!

microchip number 9, 10, or 15 digits long

While getting your pet microchipped is a significant first step, ensuring the information linked to it is accurate and up-to-date is equally essential. When your pet is microchipped, each chip has its own, unique identification number, acting as their ticket home if they ever get lost and are scanned by vets or shelters. It usually consists of 9-, 10-, or 15- digits and every digit matters; a digit difference can make a huge impact; therefore, it is necessary to ensure that the microchip numbers registered are accurate.

However, knowing this number accurately alone isn’t enough; it must also be registered with a dedicated, reliable pet registry like BC Pet Registry to ensure vets and shelters can contact you for a swift reunion if your pet ever goes missing. Our recent events have shown that 20% of microchipped pets were not linked to any registry, meaning vets and shelters cannot directly contact the owners. Great news is that the many of the Khatsahlano community members have their pets’ microchips registered. One extra step that they’ll still need to take is to login to their account and ensure their information is accurately entered and up-to-date.

Travelling with Your Pet?
Does your Dog have an ISO-Microchip?

Part of our mission at the Khatsahlano Street Party event was to give advance notice to the Khatsahlano community about the new CDC regulations for bringing their dogs to the United States. As of August 1st, 2024, all dogs entering the country must have an ISO-compatible microchip as part of these new requirements. If you have travel plans to the U.S., read about the microchip component of the regulations here: New CDC Travel Regulations: Bringing Dogs Into the U.S.

Many of the Khatsahlano furries came and visit us bright and early that morning before it got too hot. We were even visited by a 39 year old parrot! It was definitely a great day full of meaningful interactions with the pet owners in the community.
