BC SPCA Adoptions and Microchip Registrations

Why Microchip Registration Matters After Adopting a Pet from the BC SPCA

With the holidays around the corner, many families may start thinking about adding a furry friend to their household. If you’re considering adopting from the BC SPCA, it’s important to understand how microchips and registration keep your new companion safe.

A friendly reminder: Getting a pet is a lifelong commitment, not just a holiday gift.

The BC SPCA microchips all cats, dogs, and rabbits they adopt out, providing a permanent form of identification. However, microchipping is just the first step. To ensure your pet’s microchip is traceable to your contact information, you must confirm the accuracy of your BC Pet Registry account. BC SPCA staff handle initial registration, but it’s your responsibility as a pet guardian to verify that details like your phone number and email are correct.

Note: The adoption fee includes services like microchipping for certain animals. Learn more about what the adoption fee covers here: What does the BC SPCA adoption fee include?.

How BC SPCA Makes Microchip Registration Easy

When you adopt a cat, dog, or a rabbit from the BC SPCA, they will already be microchipped as part of the adoption process. BC SPCA staff automatically enroll your pet and your contact information in the BC Pet Registry. However, it’s essential to verify the details on your adoption paperwork, particularly your phone number and email address, as these are used for the microchip registration. The email address provided during adoption will also serve as your login name for the BC Pet Registry account.

Important Note: For those adopting a pet with a partner, family, roommate etc. it’s important to decide in advance whose name and email address will be used for the adoption paperwork and the BC Pet Registry account. Aligning the account details with one guardian helps avoid disputes or confusion in the future, especially when updating information or transferring ownership later on. Having a single, consistent point of contact ensures a smooth experience and keeps your pet’s details accurate.

Take Control: Accessing and Updating Your BC Pet Registry Account

Once the adoption process is complete, you gain full access to your BC Pet Registry account. This means you can update your contact information, add emergency contacts, upload pet photos, and include any medical or behavioral details that could be helpful if your pet ever gets lost and is brought to an unfamiliar environment. You can also add co-guardian details to ensure that someone else can be contacted if you’re unavailable or away on vacation.

Tips: Going away on vacation? Consider adding your pet-sitter as your pet’s emergency contact. For more information, read Essential Microchip and Registration Tips for Pet Sitting: What Owners and Sitters Need to Know – BC Pet Registry
