Microchip Registration: Why You Must Double-Check Before Halloween

Halloween is just around the corner, and with it comes fireworks, loud noises, and increased risks of pets running away. Microchip registration is crucial for your pet’s safety, ensuring a fast return if they get lost and brought in. While many pet owners think having a microchip is enough, the registration of the microchip is equally important.

Recent findings from the 2024 Delta Animal Expo revealed that many pets still have unregistered microchips. Now is the perfect time to check your pet’s registration status to prevent any last-minute stress.

Fireworks Create Panic for Pets

Studies show that nearly half of dogs fear fireworks, while 80% of horses display anxiety. Fireworks create significant challenges for animals, often leading to frantic behavior. Aleigh Ateyo, a night emergency officer at the BC SPCA, shares, “On nights when there are fireworks, the call load increases. Animals are frantic, and once a pet is frightened and running, it’s almost impossible to catch them.” She receives upwards of 30 to 50 calls on Halloween night, most of which are related to the effects of fireworks.

Other common calls include reports of cats and dogs escaping from yards, breaking through windows, or wildlife behaving unusually, trying to find shelter from the noise. To ensure a swift reunion with your lost pet, it’s important to ensure your pet is microchipped, registered, and wears visible identification like a collar with a tag.
